Bethany Hamilton was thirteen years old when the future she had planned nearly disappeared in a matter of seconds.

On October 31, 2003, she was surfing near her home in Hawaii when a tiger shark attacked, severing her left arm near the shoulder. Bethany later said she lost approximately 60 percent of her blood and considered her survival a miracle. At the time, she feared the attack had also ended her dream of becoming a professional surfer.

Surfing was not simply something Bethany enjoyed. She had grown up in the water and was already competing. Suddenly, nearly every movement required to paddle, balance, and rise onto a board would have to be relearned.

While recovering in the hospital, she met fellow surfer Mike Coots, who had lost a leg in another shark attack and continued to surf. His visit gave Bethany an early glimpse of what might still be possible. She later remembered realizing that if he could return to the ocean, perhaps she could too.

Faith Before the Attack

Bethany’s faith was not something she discovered only after tragedy.

She has credited her parents with helping her build a strong Christian foundation while she was growing up. When the attack left her facing pain, uncertainty, and a life she had never imagined, that foundation became something she could stand on.

“I truly believe that was a big part of what got me through the incident,” she later told an audience at Ellsworth Air Force Base.

Bethany still had fears. She had to adjust to a changed body and consider whether she would ever compete again. Faith did not make those questions disappear, but it kept her from believing the worst moment of her life had decided the rest of it.

She believed God still had a purpose for her.

Back in the Water

On November 26, less than one month after the attack, Bethany returned to the ocean.

The first attempts were difficult. She had to find a new way to paddle, catch a wave, push herself upright, and maintain her balance with one arm. What had once felt natural now required patience, practice, and determination.

Her return was not merely a symbolic ride meant to prove that she could enter the water again. Bethany intended to compete

In 2005, at age fifteen, she won the United States national under-18 surfing championship. She later became a professional surfer, competing around the world and continuing to challenge expectations about what was possible after losing an arm.

Bethany has never described that journey as the result of determination alone. She points to faith, family, perseverance, and the people who encouraged her when the path ahead was uncertain.

On her official website, she explains that many believed the attack would end her surfing career, but God had a bigger plan.

A Story That Reached Beyond Surfing

Bethany’s autobiography, Soul Surfer, introduced her story to readers around the world. It was later adapted into a feature film, bringing greater attention to her survival, return to competition, and Christian faith.

She also began speaking to audiences about courage, resilience, and trusting God through circumstances that cannot be changed. Her message has reached young people, wounded service members, amputees, families, and others learning how to move forward after loss.

Bethany’s story is powerful because she does not pretend the attack left her untouched. She lost her arm. She had to relearn familiar tasks and work harder to pursue the sport she loved. She also had to face the ocean again after it had become the setting of her greatest trauma.

She returned anyway—not because the fear was gone, but because she still believed her life held purpose.

Years later, Bethany would become known not only as a surfer, but also as an author, speaker, wife, mother, and mentor. She continues to speak openly about Christ and encourage others to remain hopeful during the hardest seasons of life.

Her faith did not restore the arm she lost or return life to exactly what it had been before October 31, 2003. It gave her the strength to build a meaningful life from what remained.

Bethany returned to the water less than one month after the attack. She did not return because surfing had suddenly become easy or because every question had been answered. She returned because she still believed God had a purpose for her life.

The shark attack took her arm, but it did not take her faith, her calling, or her willingness to move forward.
